Although officially called Thera, Santorini's popular name stems from Saint Irene, the island's patron saint. This island is different from the rest of the Cyclades group by virtue of its interesting geological structure, the result of the eruptions of a now inactive volcano.

The island was first inhabited by Minoans from Crete. In 1500 BC, a volcano in the center of the island erupted, causing a tidal wave that destroyed the palace of Knossos and caused a lot of damage in the north coast of Crete.

These ridges rising sharply out of the Aegean were thought to be the remains of the Lost City of Atlantis.

From the landing place Skala, one can ascend the cliff to the town of Fira (height of approx.1000 ft) , the capital, on foot or on donkey-back (587 steps). There's also a cable-car which transport you up the hill.

Fira is very attractive, with winding narrow streets, filled with shops and arcades and small restaurants on both sides.

There are 2 gorgeous cathedrals, one Orthodox and one Catholic.
